FAIR WEATHER FRIENDS
"There is a friend that sticks closer than a brother."
Proverbs 18:24b (NASB)
Ann and I were having coffee with some dear friends when someone commented about the cup the woman was drinking from. The saying on the cup went something like this: "You are such a good friend that if we were on a sinking boat and there was only one life jacket, I sure would miss you."
Have you ever had friends like that? Friends who will stick with you as long as things are going good, but the moment things get a little tough, they take the life jacket and bail out? I know I have experienced friends like that. I think everyone has.
Praise the Lord, not all friends are like that. Proverbs tells us that there is one Friend who will not bail out on us, that He will, in fact, stick closer than a brother. That friend is God. I can tell you from many past experiences that He will not bail on you. I don't know about you but I find great assurance in that fact.
Of course, God will only stick close if you have received the gift of eternal life offered through the sacrifice of His son. If you have not done so, why not cement this friendship right now? Simply acknowledge that you are a sinner, ask Christ to forgive you of you sins, and ask Him to take control of your life. The Bible says that "Whoever will call upon the name of the Lord will be saved" (Joel 2:32, Acts 2:21, Romans 10:13).
If you called on His name, welcome to the family and the beginning of a beautiful, eternal friendship.
